If you pay for your own health insurance, either an individual or Medicare Advantage Plan you just got a
letter for your insurance provider explaining that you will now be assessed a tax on your insurance claims.
Outraged? You should be.
Governor Rick Snyder and Lansing Republicans chose to tax health insurance claims - which disproportionately hurt individual policy holders and seniors on fixed incomes who pay for Medicare Advantage plans.
Big companies will only be taxed for what claims their employees use, while seniors and small business owners will be assessed on their premiums.
Governor Snyder wanted this change because of the slight chance, one day, the federal government may make Michigan change the way we previously funded Medicaid. However, there were no plans set in stone and this change was wholly uneeded.
